"A great struggle of war was raging across the whole of the Pacific Ocean, from Pearl Harbor out to the many far-flung Islands that few had ever heard of. Island groups and atolls scattered in faraway places like Midway, the Gilbert Islands with Tarawa and Makin, islands that our marines paid heavy prices to capture. The Marshalls and Solomans, that few will ever forget again because of the price our country paid at Guadalcanal and Bougainville. And now the Islands of Guam, Tinian and Saipan. ..."Our Navy needed more ships of all kinds and sizes: aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, troop transports, cargo ships but most of all, the fast new greyhounds of the fleet, the DESTROYERS, the smaller of the navy’s men of war. "In Seattle, Washington, in a shipyard situated in the Puget Sound’s great waterways, was a first class ship-building company that had the responsibility to turn out as many of the new destroyers as they could..."place. |

| The ship, which near the end of WW II was heavily damaged off the coast of Japan, is here memorialized, along with the officers and crew, by a plank owner who solicited his fellow servicemen for their stories and photographs over a 20-year period. Orders, ship's log pages, memos and other navy documents are all here. The ship's origins, building, commissioning, assignments, and actions are described in detail.
The mood, thinking, experiences both humorous and tragic of the men on boarsdare vividly evoked and retold in their own words with lots of photographs. The Pacific Theatre war, crystallized in the saga of just one ship, comes alive again on these pages.
