John Sheedy's paintings are not what they might appear at first glance. They are not, as are most well-worked landscapes, simply representations of pretty places. These visions of the marshes, roads, churches and farmhouses of north-coastal Massachusetts are intense, loving, even analytical studies of light, earth and history. They are the products of a painter who lives a complex and demanding life and seeks to extract peace and solace with a brush. They speak also to truth and commitment. These paintings of Sheedy's chosen environment of Newbury, Massachusretts offer moments-- usually as the sun is coming up or going down-- of a world seemingly at peace, settled, subdued. And yet the shadows are forming at the edges; night waits; and even as we linger at a scene which seems to beckon in familiarity, we are reminded of how fragile, temporary, and fleeting these moments have become. In a world of pain and loss, this artist recreates-- with intense faithfulness and color-- a world in which sense, order, memory, love, and stability prevail-- if only for the moment. All paintings are oil on canvas; usually mounted on board if under 12"x16",larger sizes are usually stretched. The frames are hand made by the artist in wood painted with gold-leaf. click any image below to REVIEW and PLEASE give each page TIME TO LOAD... there are over 1.000 images on this site
