THE MILLS

the old mills of Lawrence, Massachustts as interpreted by pastel artist MICHAEL RAMSEUR

"Working at the Mill" mill # 8

These beautiful relics of an earlier manufacturing era in New England are more than just illustrations of a bygone economy; they are reminders of a way of life chosen by generations of immigrants who depended on this employment to keep their families intact, and of the labor which built entire societies and institutions in a developing region. Their crumbling edifices, massive widows and intricate architectural details are frozen in time by the pastel mastery of Michael Ramseur, in the same way that he captured the sullen or violent moods of the abandoned asylum in Danvers (see link at bottom of page).
