It is a sad fact of life that a new author, especially one whose book has an untested market potential or a niche audience, will be able to get a contract from a conventional publishing house only with enormous difficulty, if at all. So the author is faced with THREE basic alternatives: (1) LEARN Self-publishing. Here the author is forced to take a break from writing in order to go through the publishing learning curveto perform obtaining ISBN and other registration numbers, copyright, barcode, editing, layout, designing a cover, pricing, shopping for a printer, paying for a press run, arranging warehousing, designing and printing press releases and other advertising/ kit materials, buying mail lists for electronic and non-electronic mailings to resellers and reviewers, setting up re-seller accounts, entering competitions, placing ads, writing and sending articles, applying to libraries and book clubs, creating a website, securing merchant credit card accounts, receiving orders, packaging and postage, invoicing, collecting accounts, etc. This is a route which could conceivably detour the author for years and in the long run, cost far more than utilizing an outside service. (2) Select an ALL-Service Publisher on a Royalty Basis. This means that, if your book is accepted, the publisher performs all services required and pays the author a percentage of salesanywhere from 5 to 50%, depending on the amount of risk the book represents and the amount of money the publisher had to pay out or is receiving from sales through its own channels. If you select an ALL-service company, you may run into difficulty if your book is very large, or contain more illustrations and color features than they want to deal with. When the author wanted to submit Haunted Palace for production, he submitted it to 20 all-service publishers, only to be rejected by all except 2 of them because of the number of color pages involved. This is how ARTSHIP became a publisher! (3) Use Fee-Paid Publishing Services. There are various options hereall of which also take time to assess and selectbut there is also flexibility, in that an author may buy all the services required from a single book publishing group, or from more than one group or company, to keep costs low as possible. (S)he may select a book editing/ formatting service for the physical aspects of pre-productionobtaining registry numbers, barcode, and copyright, and having the book layout and design completedprinting from another-- then purchase services from a book publicity company to get the title reviewed by newspapers and journals, carried by the book resellers, entered in directories, book clubs, competitions --. And purchase sales, warehousing and distribution services from yet a fourth company. This however can be time-consuming, to research and deal with all these services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reviewing the Competition: this is a selection of full-service companies offering their services on the internet as of August 1, 2006: Company “A”, a paid publisher, offers an all-inclusive service, including the production of the book. It offers the author royalties (a percentage of sales) of 5 to 15 percent on retail sales, and between 10 and 50 percent on any books sold via its own website. It also offers post-production marketing services such as Its Expanded Publicity Package which includes a press release to be sent to 300 media outlets, 30 “starter” kits for the author to send to bookstores, plus a catalog of tips for the author to use for his/her campaign; and offers this for $ 700. Company “B” is a publishing company which, if it accepts the book, will perform the marketing and distribution as well as publication, paying the author 20% of sales revenues. It gives the author 5 copies free and sells author additional books at 40% off list price. Company “H” is a publishing company which, if it accepts the book, will perform the marketing and distribution as well as publication, paying the author 40% of sales revenues. Company “T” will if it accepts your book-- edit, produce, publicize, and distribute the book through its Best Seller PLUS plan, giving the author between 10 and 40 books for his/her own use and charging $1949 for all publicity/ distribution services over and above production/ printing. ARTSHIPpublishing will perform any or all of the services required, and handles all in-house except printing; for which Artship will select the most economical among the highest-quality printers, and can arrange for “short-run” (under 1,000) or volume print runs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are several very dependable publicity programs offered on a post-production basis; however some do not PERFORM the mailings, but supply the materials and lists, instruct the author how this can be done. Other programs perform electronic mailings ONLY; and the author should know that it is hardly advisable to rely on electronic transmission alone to catch the attention of newspaper, library, and reseller contacts. Here are a few publicity/promotion programs available to authors, from other companies: Bowker’s is the premiere book promotion company ONLINE, primarily because Bowker’s assigns the ISBN, and their international book directory is accessed by everyone to identify books in print. They sell a variety of publicity programs as well--but they do not mail promotional kits, letters, press releases or anything else by the U.S. mail. Their online promo programs are reliable and respected, however, Bowker’s premiere program, with a gold membership, would cost upwards of $ 1,000 per year, and the author would need to do all non-electronic mailings. Company “J”, one of the foremost book publicity /promotion companies, offers its Targeted Media Publicity Program, described as including “ the creation of a professionally written press release with a cover photo of your book and contact information, its release via email and fax to a thorough and updated media database “specific to your book”, delivery of approximately 500 to 800 media contact names including editors, reporters, columnists and syndicated writers.” (Note that what is delivered is contact information for the author to use) . The cost of this program is $895.00; not including the cost the author would have for mailing to the 500 800 contacts. Company “L” is a another publicity company offering P.R. services to authors. They describe their Premium Bookselling Package as: ”We write an AP (Associated Press) style press release about your book, send it to 5000 bookstore owners-- and to 700 book reviewers and critics at newspapers and magazines across the country. We always notify you of every response and follow-through on all submission requests.” The program costs $850. This description fails to mention that this is purely an electronic mailing, and does not include supplying the author with their list, which includes religious, children’s, mystic, and all other kinds of stores whether appropriate for the book or not. This company is also an “online only” promoter, but without making that fact obvious. ARTSHIPpublishing will perform any or all of the services required, and handles all in-house except printing; for which Artship will select the most economical among the highest-quality printers, and can arrange for “short-run” (under 1,000) or volume print runs.
